USCG Approved and STCW-95 Compliant Celestial Navigation Course

A team of professional licensed mariners teaches the Houston Marine 10-Day Celestial Navigation course. The course is a rigorous program designed for Master 500/1600 Gross Tons (Domestic Oceans), including mate or Master of Offshore Supply Vessels. The course is run Monday - Friday for 2 consecutive weeks. The instructor is available on Saturday for extra instruction and help on problems.

The policy letter requiring at sea assessments on several "Control Sheets" is available on the web at

Upon successful completion of the course, with a passing grade of 80%, you will have satisfied the following USCG requirements:
  • The Celestial Navigation examination requirements of 46CFR 10.215(c) and 10.401(d) for any deck license up to Master not More Than 500/1600 Gross Tons Upon Oceans, including mate or Master of Offshore Supply Vessels
  • Anyone taking a celestial navigation exam to add "oceans" on a license 500 GRT and above must now take a newly created "Navigation General" test in addition to the usual navigation problems involving sight reduction and other celestial techniques. Houston Marine's Celestial Navigation course is now approved by the Coast Guard to substitute for both parts of the exam for licenses 1600 GRT and under. (The Coast Guard requires applicants for any license over 1600 GRT to take the standard REC exam even if they have completed an approved course.)
In addition, the instructor will sign off several "Control Sheets" which do not require the assessment to be accomplished at sea. Additional assessments must be completed on board the vessel to complete the requirements for the Oceans endorsement.
